2025 USTA Missouri Valley Outstanding Adult/Senior Tournament of the Year

USTA Heart of America Heartland Wheelchair Classic

Tournament Director: Rebecca Falkner Axelrod

The Vision

I have always been incredibly passionate about tennis for all. In 2024 I made it my mission to take over the yearly wheelchair tournament that was in Kansas City. With local support, the USTA Heart of America Heartland Wheelchair Classic was born. This is a L4 Tournament which takes place in Kansas City every spring. I did not want to create just another tournament - I wanted to create a player experience. Instead of players just coming into town and leaving I wanted to create a sense of community.

Before the tournament kicks off we host a junior clinic for local players and their families. After the clinic we meet for a family style dinner. This creates that sense of community. Throughout the weekend we invite the public to come out to enjoy this amazing event and meet the players.

We started the tournament with 18 participants - the most ever. In 2026 we grew to 22 participants! Each year I continue to think outside-the-box to continue to grow this event for the players, their families and volunteers.
